SANTA CRUZ, CA – University of California President, Janet Napolitano and Congressman Xavier Becerra will welcome attendees to the national conference for SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos & Native Americans in Science, during the opening ceremony on Thursday, October 16 beginning at 4 pm at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The largest STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) diversity event in the country, the SACNAS National Conference brings together students and science professionals of color and their allies for a weekend of cutting-edge science, mentoring, networking, and professional development.
As President of the University of California, Janet Napolitano leads the world’s premier academic system with 10 campuses, five medical centers, three affiliated national laboratories, and a statewide agriculture and natural resources program. A distinguished public servant, most recently Napolitano served as Secretary for Homeland Security from 2009 – 2013 and Governor of Arizona from 2003-2009.
Dr. Maggie Werner-Washburne, Regents’ Professor at the University of New Mexico and SACNAS President states, “With vibrant SACNAS chapters at nine out of 10 UC campuses and a solid base of professional SACNAS members as UC faculty, Napolitano’s presence at SACNAS is a crucial opportunity for us to showcase the work of the Society and our members.”
Representative Xavier Becerra (Democrat, 34th District) serves as the Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. The presence of Congressman Becerra is significant in terms of the SACNAS science policy efforts to leverage the knowledge the Society has garnered through over 40 years of direct service to inform and influence public policies and governmental funding that will support the advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in science.
